Will Councillors Be Happy About Selected Sites for Modular Housing?

On Thursday evening at City Hall, councillors are due to discuss details of some sites earmarked for modular housing scheme.

So far, five patches of land have been named as potential areas to unpack and construct modular housing for homeless families in the city, in Poppintree, Mourne Road, Cherry Orchard, St. Helena’s and Belcamp. You can see a zoom-in of where exactly they are through the links above.

Now that some of the first sites have been named, we’ll see whether councillors are happy. There are likely to be concerns that they are located in areas that already have a heavy amount of social housing, and there will also be scrutiny of whether there are suitable services and supports available.

In late September, as plans for modular housing picked up steam, People Before Profit’s Tina McVeigh, objected to the lack of clarity on where the units would go. She was wary about voting to support something without know the full details.

Labour councillor Alison Gilliland said that city councillors are conscious of the need to avoid concentrations of social housing.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fail’s Daithi de Roiste has already in the past, objected to a new NABCO social housing development planned for Cherry Orchard.
