F?or many decades now Traveller accommodation has needed attention, but up until recently it has been widely ignored and brushed under the carpet by those who have had the power and ability to make changes. This work, “Kathleen”, represents the years of neglect and empty promises which have been made to the Travelling community by the state time and time again.
“Kathleen” is part of Accommodate vs Assimilate, a body of work which I created to investigate the devastating housing crisis and human-rights violations endured by the Irish Travelling Community in modern-day Ireland.
I am a young Traveller woman who began practising art at Crawford College of Art and Design in 2007 and graduated with an honours degree in Fine Art as well as a Higher Diploma in Art & Design Education. As a visual artist I feel I have a unique opportunity to represent and record my community from within.
