Event: Social Housing, Fire Safety, and Grenfell – in Conversation with Peter Apps

If you’re interested in social housing, fire safety, and journalism, we’d like to invite you to join us – and the journalism faculty at Griffith College – for a chat with Peter Apps, an award-winning reporter and editor for UK-based Inside Housing.

Even if Apps isn’t on your radar yet, you’ve likely read or heard about some of his stories. Inside Housing has been recognised for its dogged coverage of social housing and fire safety – and, in particular, the Grenfell Tower tragedy and regulatory failures.

That included revealing that the government had failed to act in 2014 when it was warned over the safety of the kind of cladding used on the tower.

Apps was Journalist of the Year at the British Journalism Awards for Specialist Media in 2018. Inside Housing had, the judges said, “led the way on exposing issues around fire safety” in tower blocks, and “performed a huge service to tower block residents across the country”. He was also shortlisted for the Orwell Prize for Journalism in 2019, getting a special mention from the judges.

On the evening of Thursday, 24 October, via video-link, we’ll be talking to Apps about:

• How Inside Housing has gone about its coverage of fire safety after Grenfell
• More broadly, his tips for reporting on housing
• The role of specialist, niche media organisations
• The capacity of journalism to bring about positive change
